Learn About Depression Treatment

Treatment for depression at Rio Vista Behavioral Health in El Paso, TX

Depression is a mental health challenge that is characterized by experiences such as overwhelming sadness, lack of energy, diminished self-confidence, and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

The clinical term for depression is depressive disorder. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) identifies multiple depressive disorders, which are differentiated primarily by the onset, nature, and severity of symptoms. The two most common forms of depression are major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder.

Adolescents and adults who struggle with major depressive disorder will experience acute disturbances in areas such as mood, energy, cognitive abilities, and sleep patterns. These effects will endure for a period of at least two weeks, during which time they will cause significant distress or impairments in one or more important areas of life.

Adolescents and adults who develop persistent depressive disorder will struggle with similar experiences as those who have major depressive disorder. However, in the case of persistent depressive disorder, symptoms will be less intense, but will last much longer. An adult will need to struggle with symptoms for two years to meet the clinical criteria for a diagnosis of persistent depressive disorder, while an adolescent will need to experience these challenges for at least one year.

The various forms of depression are treatable conditions. At Rio Vista Behavioral Health, we provide comprehensive depression treatment for adolescents and adults. Services at our depression treatment center in El Paso, Texas, are personalized according to the unique needs of each individual. All care is offered in age-appropriate programs to ensure maximum benefit.

At Rio Vista Behavioral Health, adolescents and adults can receive the customized depression treatment that will empower them to manage their symptoms, regain control of their thoughts and actions, and achieve significant improvements in quality of life.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a family member or loved one get treatment for depression

If someone you care about has been struggling with depression, you may be worried, confused, or even frustrated. Please know that these reactions are valid and understandable. When an adolescent or adult develops depression, family members, close friends, and other loved ones are often impacted.

If your loved one has a depressive disorder, they need professional help, which may include receiving care at a depression treatment center. You can play an important role in getting them the care they need. Please consider the following:

  • Your first priority is to ensure your loved one’s safety. Depression can put a person at risk for self-harm or suicide. If you believe that your friend or family member may be in imminent danger, call 911 or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
  • Next, educate yourself about depressionVisit reputable websites or consult with experts. The more you understand what your loved one is experiencing, the better prepared you’ll be to provide valuable support.
  • While you’re learning about depression, you should also research effective depression treatment options for adolescents and adults. Once you are aware of the options that are available to your loved one, you can begin to identify depression treatment centers in your area that appear to offer the type and level of care that your loved one needs. Remember that there’s no such thing as one perfect depression treatment program. Your goal should be to find the depression treatment center that’s the best fit for your loved one.
  • Throughout this process, keep the lines of communication open with your loved one. Talk to them. Express your concern and share what you’re finding. Resist the urge to issue ultimatums, and don’t try to force your loved one to enter a depression treatment program. Listen respectfully, continue to emphasize your love and support, and encourage them to take the steps they need to get effective treatment for depression.
  • When your loved one is ready to enter a depression treatment center, do whatever you can to support this effort. Help them with appointments, transportation, childcare arrangements, and whatever other challenges they’re experiencing. This will allow them to focus on getting the depression treatment that they need.

Finally, remember that spending time in a depression treatment center will be just one part of your loved one’s journey toward improved health. Depression is a complex mental health disorder, and recovery takes time. Set reasonable goals, manage your expectations, and plan to be a source of continued love and support during and long after your loved one’s time in treatment for depression.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider getting treatment for depression at Rio Vista Behavioral Health in El Paso, TX

It is not an exaggeration to note that untreated depression can have a profound negative impact on virtually all areas of a person’s life. Adolescents and adults who need professional treatment for depression may, in the absence of that treatment, struggle in the context of their relationships, academic progress, career advancement, and financial stability

Untreated depression can cause a person to withdraw or become isolated from friends and family members, thus depriving them of vital interpersonal support at a time when it is most needed. Untreated depression can also increase a person’s risk for various additional challenges, such as substance abuse, addiction, co-occurring mental health disorders, physical health problems, self-harm, and suicide.

However, when an adolescent or adult receives depression treatment at Rio Vista Behavioral Health, they can significantly reduce their risk for continued harm. While a person is healing at our depression treatment center in El Paso, TX, they can also begin to repair any damage that they’ve already experienced as a result of their struggles with depression.

At Rio Vista Behavioral Health, adolescents and adults work with experienced depression treatment professionals in a safe, structured, and highly supportive treatment environment. When you choose our depression treatment center for yourself or a loved one, you take an important step toward long-term healing.

Through comprehensive treatment and support, each patient discovers their strengths and resiliency and leaves our depression treatment center equipped with the skills they need to be successful on their journey to complete recovery.

Our depression treatment center is divided into four coed units, each of which offers tailored care for a specified population. These units include a general adult unit and a psychiatric intensive care unit for patients age 18 and older, an adolescent unit for patients ages 11-17, and a specialty unit for geriatric patients and patients with coexisting medical conditions. Please note that there is not an established age range for the specialty unit. Instead, we determine admission into this unit based on the diagnosis and the capabilities of the patient.

At our depression treatment center, patients have access to the following interventions and services, depending on their needs:

Medical care: For patients who are suffering from coexisting medical conditions, our depression treatment center offers basic medical care. The services we provide include continuation of medications for chronic illnesses, insulin and glucose monitoring for patients with diabetes, and minor wound care. We do not provide medical equipment, but if a patient has a CPAP machine, they may bring it with them and use it during their time in treatment. We do not offer IV or oxygen therapy, nor do we provide care for indwelling catheters or wound vacs. Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants provide all of our medical services.

Medication management services: Patients meet with a psychiatrist within 24 hours of admission into our depression treatment center. Patients who are on medication or will be starting on medication meet with the psychiatrist daily throughout their stay. Psychiatrist visits are also available on an as-needed basis at our depression treatment center.

Group therapy: Group therapy is at the core of the care we provide at our depression treatment center. Licensed clinical social workers and therapists lead group therapy sessions, where patients can learn about mental illness, including depression, and discover ways to cope with and manage their symptoms. Group sessions also give patients the opportunity to connect with others who may be experiencing similar circumstances. Patients participate in five to six structured groups per day, seven days a week. These groups include discussions on things such as mindfulness, coping with grief/loss, and healing from the effects of trauma.

Individual therapy: At our depression treatment center, licensed clinical social workers and therapists provide individual therapy sessions for patients when needed. These sessions offer a safe, confidential space in which patients can discuss any concerns they have or issues they are struggling with that they may not feel comfortable sharing in a group setting.

Family therapy: We also offer family therapy on an as-needed basis at our depression treatment center. Licensed clinical therapists and social workers run these sessions, which give family members the opportunity to learn more about ways they can help their loved one both during and after their time in treatment for depression. These sessions can also serve to unify families and strengthen their bonds with one another.

Evidence-based treatment modalities: In order to ensure that patients at our depression treatment center receive innovative, holistic care, we use an integrated approach that offers a broader spectrum of therapeutic interventions that have proven to lead to more successful treatment outcomes. Examples of the evidence-based treatment modalities we use at our depression treatment center include the following:

  • Art therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy

Continuing Care After Inpatient Treatment for Depression

Continuing care options for depression treatment

Inpatient care at our depression treatment center is only the first step in achieving long-term healing. For this reason, we arm our patients with the tools and skills they need to be successful after they leave our inpatient hospital. Discharge planning begins at the time of admission, and our staff adjusts those plans appropriately based on the patient’s progress during treatment.

When a patient is preparing for discharge, we provide them with referrals for continuing care with outpatient providers. If a patient would benefit from a progressive step-down plan, we may refer them to a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or an intensive outpatient program (IOP). All continuing care decisions are made in discussion with the patient, ensuring that we take into account what they want their ongoing support to look like.

If you believe that you or a loved one could benefit from the care we offer at our depression treatment center, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
